RESUMO

Here we present an improved, rapid method for filling quasi-nulls in symmetrical radiation patterns synthesized by equispaced linear arrays, leading to the generation of multiple solutions. Considering the polynomial representation of the pattern, this null-filling is achieved by displacing the roots radially off the unit circle, keeping a constant displacement. This allows analyzing how the potential solutions vary with the quasi-uniform filling and the associated directivity loss. This method is based on the Cardano-Vieta relations, which link the coefficients of a complex Schelkunoff polynomial with its roots. As examples of application, we have considered a 20/100 element Dolph-Chebyshev pattern, with a spacing between the elements [Formula: see text], side lobe level of - 20/- 28 dB and three inner sidelobes at - 40/- 50 dB.

BACKGROUND: Watermelon mosaic virus (WMV) is one of the most prevalent viruses affecting melon worldwide. Recessive resistance to WMV in melon has previously been reported in the African accession TGR-1551. Moreover, the genomic regions associated to the resistance have also been described. Nevertheless, the transcriptomic response that might infer the resistance to this potyvirus has not been explored. RESULTS: We have performed a comparative transcriptomic analysis using mock and WMV-inoculated plants of the susceptible cultivar "Bola de oro" (BO) and a resistant RIL (Recombinant inbred line) derived from the initial cross between "TGR-1551" and BO. In total, 616 genes were identified as differentially expressed and the weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) detected 19 gene clusters (GCs), of which 7 were differentially expressed for the genotype x treatment interaction term. SNPs with a predicted high impact on the protein function were detected within the coding regions of most of the detected DEGs. Moreover, 3 and 16 DEGs were detected within the QTL regions previously described in chromosomes 11 and 5, respectively. In addition to these two specific genomic regions, we also observde large transcriptomic changes from genes spread across the genome in the resistant plants in response to the virus infection. This early response against WMV implied genes involved in plant-pathogen interaction, plant hormone signal transduction, the MAPK signaling pathway or ubiquitin mediated proteolysis, in detriment to the photosynthetic and basal metabolites pathways. Moreover, the gene MELO3C021395, which coded a mediator of RNA polymerase II transcription subunit 33A (MED33A), has been proposed as the candidate gene located on chromosome 11 conferring resistance to WMV. CONCLUSIONS: The comparative transcriptomic analysis presented here showed that, even though the resistance to WMV in TGR-1551 has a recessive nature, it triggers an active defense response at a transcriptomic level, which involves broad-spectrum resistance mechanisms. Thus, this study represents a step forward on our understanding of the mechanisms underlaying WMV resistance in melon. In addition, it sheds light into a broader topic on the mechanisms of recessive resistances.

Thermal inversions, typical in the winter season, consist of cold air at the Earth's surface being trapped under a layer of warmer air. Such an effect keeps normal convective overturning of the atmosphere from penetrating through. This phenomenon highly increases the toxicity of the atmosphere, while modifying its dielectric constant, resulting in major implications in terms of public health and wireless communications. Indeed, air pollution in large cities (related, in most cases, to particulate matter that consists of different chemical components, which can have warming or cooling effects) is primarily caused by chemical and photochemical reactions in the atmosphere. Appropriate usage of array antennas allows the effective tracking of changes in humidity (e.g., coated Yagi-Uda antennas, which do not interfere with 5G) and in the dielectric constant (e.g., optimized quasi-Yagi-Uda antennas, yielding to accurate measurements of sulfides and black carbon concentration). Remarkably, important health effects come from the combined action of electromagnetic fields with fine and coarse black carbon particles. The appearance of ducts, which are caused by thermal inversions, provokes the creation of super-refractive regions in the troposphere as well, which result in the anomalous propagation of wireless communications.

Despite playing a central role in antenna design, aperture efficiency is often disregarded. Consequently, the present study shows that maximizing the aperture efficiency reduces the required number of radiating elements, which leads to cheaper antennas with more directivity. For this, it is considered that the boundary of the antenna aperture has to be inversely proportional to the half-power beamwidth of the desired footprint for each ϕ-cut. As an example of application, it has been considered the rectangular footprint, for which a mathematical expression was deduced to calculate the aperture efficiency in terms of the beamwidth, synthesizing a rectangular footprint of a 2:1 aspect ratio by starting from a pure real flat-topped beam pattern. In addition, a more realistic pattern was studied, the asymmetric coverage defined by the European Telecommunications Satellite Organization, including the numerical computation of the contour of the resulting antenna and its aperture efficiency.

The current study has mapped the impact of changes in different climatic parameters on the productivity of major crops cultivated in India like cereal, pulses, and oilseed crops. The vulnerability of crops to different climatic conditions like exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive indicators along with its different components and agribusiness has been studied. The study uses data collected over the past six decades from 1960 to 2020. Analytical tools such as the Tobit regression model and Principal Component Analysis were used for the investigation which has shown that among climatic parameters, an increase in temperature along with huge variations in rainfall and consistent increase in CO2 emissions have had a negative impact by reducing crop productivity, particularly cereals (26 percent) and oilseed (35 percent). Among various factors, adaptive factors such as cropping intensity, agricultural machinery, and livestock density in combination with sensitivity factors such as average operational land holding size and productivity of cereals, and exposure indicators like Kharif (June-September) temperature, heavy rainfall, and rate of change in maximum and minimum Rabi (October-February) temperature have contributed significantly in increasing crop vulnerability. The agribusiness model needs to be more inclusive. It should pay attention to small and remote farmers, and provide them with inclusive finance that can facilitate the adoption of climate-smart financial innovations, serve the underserved segments, and help them reach the target of a sustainable and inclusive agribusiness model. Though the social, technological, and economic initiatives can enhance the adaptive capacity of farmers, political measures still have a major role to play in providing a healthy climate for agriculture in India through tailored adaptive approaches like the adoption of craft climate adaptation program, dilating the irrigation coverage and location-centric management options. Hence, multidisciplinary and holistic approaches are worth emphasizing for evaluating the future impacts of change in climate on Indian agriculture.

The tapetum is a specialized layer of cells within the anther, adjacent to the sporogenous tissue. During its short life, it provides nutrients, molecules and materials to the pollen mother cells and microsporocytes, being essential during callose degradation and pollen wall formation. The interaction between the tapetum and sporogenous cells in Solanum lycopersicum (tomato) plants, despite its importance for breeding purposes, is poorly understood. To investigate this process, gene editing was used to generate loss-of-function mutants that showed the complete and specific absence of tapetal cells. These plants were obtained targeting the previously uncharacterized Solyc03g097530 (SlTPD1) gene, essential for tapetum specification in tomato plants. In the absence of tapetum, sporogenous cells developed and callose deposition was observed. However, sporocytes failed to undergo the process of meiosis and finally degenerated, leading to male sterility. Transcriptomic analysis conducted in mutant anthers lacking tapetum revealed the downregulation of a set of genes related to redox homeostasis. Indeed, mutant anthers showed a reduction in the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) at early stages and altered activity of ROS-scavenging enzymes. The results obtained highlight the importance of the tapetal tissue in maintaining redox homeostasis during male gametogenesis in tomato plants.

Cucurbits powdery mildew (CPM) is one of the main limiting factors of melon cultivation worldwide. Resistance to races 1, 2, and 5 has been reported in the African accession TGR-1551, whose resistance is controlled by a dominant-recessive epistasis. The dominant and recessive quantitative trail loci (QTL) have previously been located in chromosomes 5 and 12, respectively. We used several densely genotyped BC3 families derived from the cross between TGR-1551 and the susceptible cultivar 'Bola de Oro' to finely map these resistance regions. The further phenotyping and genotyping of the selected BC5, BC5S1, BC5S2, BC4S1, BC4xPS, and (BC4xPS) S1 offspring allowed for the narrowing of the candidate intervals to a 250 and 381 kb region in chromosomes 5 and 12, respectively. Moreover, the temperature effect over the resistance provided by the dominant gene has been confirmed. High resolution melting markers (HRM) were tightly linked to both resistance regions and will be useful in marker-assisted selection programs. Candidate R genes with variants between parents that caused a potential modifier impact on the protein function were identified within both intervals. These candidate genes provide targets for future functional analyses to better understand the resistance to powdery mildew in melons.

Difference far-field patterns represent a way for pin-pointing a target in both azimuth and elevation, extremely useful in radar applications. At the present work, an innovative method for synthesizing good compromise solutions among sum and difference patterns providing low complexity of the antenna feeding network for uniform thinned arrays is addressed. This procedure uses a hybrid version of the Simulated Annealing algorithm (hybrid SA) to optimize a cost function of radiation characteristics for both sum and difference patterns as peak directivity and side lobe level (SLL) while fixing deep nulls. In this framework, examples of half-wavelength spaced linear arrays from 40 to 120 elements were analyzed, as well as an extension to planar arrays by means of separable distributions was developed. The performance of the method is analyzed with different examples and its potential outlined, showing the ability of fixing deep nulls in both sum and difference patterns which share the same uniform excitation relative amplitudes.

BACKGROUND: The exploration of clinically relevant information in the free text of electronic health records (EHRs) holds the potential to positively impact clinical practice as well as knowledge regarding Crohn disease (CD), an inflammatory bowel disease that may affect any segment of the gastrointestinal tract. The EHRead technology, a clinical natural language processing (cNLP) system, was designed to detect and extract clinical information from narratives in the clinical notes contained in EHRs. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to validate the performance of the EHRead technology in identifying information of patients with CD. METHODS: We used the EHRead technology to explore and extract CD-related clinical information from EHRs. To validate this tool, we compared the output of the EHRead technology with a manually curated gold standard to assess the quality of our cNLP system in detecting records containing any reference to CD and its related variables. RESULTS: The validation metrics for the main variable (CD) were a precision of 0.88, a recall of 0.98, and an F1 score of 0.93. Regarding the secondary variables, we obtained a precision of 0.91, a recall of 0.71, and an F1 score of 0.80 for CD flare, while for the variable vedolizumab (treatment), a precision, recall, and F1 score of 0.86, 0.94, and 0.90 were obtained, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This evaluation demonstrates the ability of the EHRead technology to identify patients with CD and their related variables from the free text of EHRs. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to use a cNLP system for the identification of CD in EHRs written in Spanish.

The present work develops an innovative methodology for fixing deep nulls in radiation patterns of symmetrical thinned arrays while maintaining a low side lobe level (SLL) and a high directivity, implementing an optimization strategy based on the simulated annealing algorithm (SA). This procedure optimizes a cost function that has a term for each characteristic of the desired radiation pattern and can distinguish between the deep nulls and the filled ones depending on whether they are on the Schelkunoff unit circle or not. Then, a direct extension of the methodology for planar arrays based on the separable distribution procedure is addressed. Consequently, some examples with half-wavelength spacing are presented, where the fixing of one, two, or three deep nulls in arrays of 40, 60, and 80 elements are illustrated as well as an extension to a 40 × 40-element planar array with rectangular grid and rectangular boundary, with two deep nulls fixed on each one of its main axes. Additionally, a comparison of the obtained results with a genetic algorithm (GA) alternative is performed. The main advantage of the proposed method is its ability to fix deep nulls in the radiation patterns, while maintaining an easy feeding network implementation.

Antenna array pattern reconfiguration is usually achieved by changing the relative amplitudes and/or phases of the excitation distribution present in the array, at the cost of complex feeding networks. In this work, the mechanical displacement of a parasitic array perpendicular to another array with a single driven element is proposed. Additionally, the antenna is optimized addressing the variation of its response led by changes of the environmental dielectric constant of a surrounding gaseous medium. In such a way, a novel multipurpose antenna of utmost simplicity is obtained. From the computation of the self and mutual impedances, a control of the antenna radiation pattern by means of the induced currents in the parasitic elements is modelled. To illustrate the procedure, the technique will be applied to the variation of the side lobe level of a pencil beam and to obtain a flat-topped broadside beam from the same pencil beam, something with high interest for satellite applications. The proposed methodology represents an advance on the development of multipurpose antennas which resounds in simplicity not only in the reconfiguration of antenna beams, but in applications for the detection of particulate matter and/or measurements of the atmospheric dielectric constant.

In the present paper, an iterative technique devoted to reproducing efficient footprints with arbitrary boundaries for planar arrays is addressed. The methodology here depicted is based on exploiting the nature of the continuous aperture distribution by expressing it as a Fourier series of moderately high orders. In this manner, the resulting illumination boundary is defined by a target three-dimensional flat-topped pattern composed of stretching and shrinking modified circular Taylor patterns and the maximum order of the series to obtain a good reconstruction is determined by means of the iterative process. Examples and comparisons with the previous literature were conducted by analyzing square and rectangular contoured beams as test cases. Additionally, interesting potentials regarding space applications from a geostationary satellite are outlined by means of the EuTELSAT (European Telecommunications Satellite Organization) European coverage case study. In such a way, its numerical approach was analyzed by including subarray architectures and discussing improvements about dynamic range ratio of the excitations without critical power losses within the illumination region.

INTRODUCTION: functional gastrointestinal disorders are prevalent and resource consuming. The use of group-consultations in these diseases is limited and no specific multidisciplinary programs have been developed. METHODS: a multidisciplinary approach was used in patients with diverse functional gastrointestinal disorders attending group-consultations (group A). Five two-hour sessions were scheduled over a four-month period. Sessions consisted of a theoretical introduction (Pathophysiology, Low fodmap diet, Over the counter medications, Mediterranean diet, and Laughter therapy workshop) followed by relaxation techniques. This group was compared to a similar group of patients who received written information covering the topics discussed during the group-consultations (group B). Severity of digestive and psychological symptoms, use of drugs and adherence to the diet were the main outcomes measured. RESULTS: the mean age of participants was 43 (± 1.38) years, 78 % were female and 73 % had at least two functional gastrointestinal disorders. Sixty-two patients were included in group A and 17 in group B. The severity of gastrointestinal and psychological symptoms at baseline was similar in both groups. Globally, there was an improvement in all symptoms in both groups. The proportion of participants with severe baseline gastrointestinal symptoms or pathologic anxiety scores that showed improvement was significantly higher in group A (74 % vs 23 %, p = 0.005; 47 % vs 8 %, p = 0.02, respectively). Symptoms were reassessed at six and 12 months after the intervention in participants from group A who attended ≥ 80 % sessions and a sustained response was observed. CONCLUSIONS: group-consultations are useful and efficient to alleviate gastrointestinal and psychological symptoms in patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders.

In the present work, the theoretical basis of the multiplicity of solutions obtained from an initial real symmetric distribution is derived. This initial solution is devoted to generating an equivalent pure real shaped-beam pattern for a concrete synthesis scenario. However, these new solutions are not based on real symmetric distributions; hence, not based on the generation of pure real patterns. The bandwidth performances and tolerance to errors provided by the multiple solutions in the array design are analyzed by considering different architectures, also including mutual coupling models and element factor expressions due to accuracy purposes. In addition, a technique to obtain efficient linear arrays by designing resonant structures is addressed. Examples involving both standard linear arrays of half-wavelength cylindrical dipoles and resonant linear arrays generating flat-top beam patterns are reported and discussed. Additionally, an extension to planar arrays performed by means of a generalisation of the Baklanov transformation through collapsed distribution techniques inspired in the well-known method devised by Tseng and Cheng is performed. In such a way, an analysis of the quality of solutions for generating circular and elliptical footprints with controlled both SLL and ripple which are highly interesting in the framework of space vehicle applications.

Cucurbit yellow stunting disorder virus (CYSDV) is one of the main limiting factors of melon cultivation worldwide. To date, no commercial melon cultivars resistant to CYSDV are available. The African accession TGR-1551 is resistant to CYSDV. Two major quantitative trait loci (QTLs) have been previously reported, both located near each other in chromosome 5. With the objective of further mapping the gene or genes responsible of the resistance, a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population derived from the cross between TGR-1551 and the susceptible cultivar 'Bola de Oro' was evaluated for resistance to CYSDV in five different assays and genotyped in a genotyping by sequencing (GBS) analysis. The major effect of one of the two QTLs located on chromosome 5 was confirmed in the multienvironment RIL assay and additionally verified through the analysis of three segregating BC1S1 populations derived from three resistant RILs. Furthermore, progeny test using the offspring of selected BC3 plants allowed the narrowing of the candidate interval to a 700 kb region. The SNP markers identified in this work will be useful in marker-assisted selection in the context of introgression of CYSDV resistance in elite cultivars.

The formation of fruits is an important step in the life cycle of flowering plants. The process of fruit development is highly regulated and involves the interaction of a complex regulatory network of genes in both space and time. To identify regulatory genes involved in fruit initiation in tomato we analyzed the transcriptomic profile of ovaries from the parthenocarpic PsEND1:barnase transgenic line. This line was generated using the cytotoxic gene barnase targeted to the anthers with the PsEND1 anther-specific promoter from pea. Among the differentially expressed genes we identified SlDOF10, a gene coding a DNA-binding with one finger (DOF) transcription factor which is activated in unpollinated ovaries of the parthenocarpic plants. SlDOF10 is preferentially expressed in the vasculature of the cotyledons and young leaves and in the root tip. During floral development, expression is visible in the vascular tissue of the sepals, the flower pedicel and in the ovary connecting the placenta with the developing ovules. The induction of the gene was observed in response to exogenous gibberellins and auxins treatments. To evaluate the gene function during reproductive development, we have generated SlDOF10 overexpressing and silencing stable transgenic lines. In particular, down-regulation of SlDOF10 activity led to a decrease in the area occupied by individual vascular bundles in the flower pedicel. Associated with this phenotype we observed induction of parthenocarpic fruit set. In summary, expression and functional analyses revealed a role for SlDOF10 gene in the development of the vascular tissue specifically during reproductive development highlighting the importance of this tissue in the process of fruit set.

RESEARCH QUESTION: Is higher antral follicle count (AFC) in healthy young women associated with higher oocyte developmental competence? DESIGN: Retrospective study of 1985 first oocyte donation cycles, corresponding to 3210 fresh embryo transfers in oocyte recipients, conducted between January 2010 and May 2014. RESULTS: Donors with higher AFC who underwent ovarian stimulation, produced both more cumulus-oocyte complexes (COC) (B coefficient = 0.47, 95% CI 0.41 to 0.53;P ≤ 0.001) and MII oocytes (B coefficient = 0.36, 95% CI 0.32 to 0.41;P ≤ 0.001) at linear regression analysis. Donors with low AFC had a higher risk of cancellation (OR 4.79, 95% CI 2.99 to 7.69;P < 0.001) or obtaining fewer than four metaphase II (MII) at ovum retrieval (OR 3.87, 95% CI 2.38 to 6.27;P < 0.001). No association was found between AFC and biochemical (OR 1.13, 95% CI 0.93 to 1.36), clinical (OR 1.05, 95% CI 0.87 to 1.28), ongoing pregnancy (OR 1.00, 95%, CI 0.82 to 1.21) or live birth rates (OR 0.97, 95% CI 0.8 to 1.19), when at least four MII were obtained at ovum retrieval. CONCLUSIONS: AFC does not relate to the developmental competence of oocytes in women younger than 35 years.

After vegetation fires, incorporation of pyrogenic organic matter (PyOM) into soil organic matter (SOM) shifts its composition toward higher aromaticity and to an increase of N-heterocyclic constituents, formerly introduced as black nitrogen (BN). To investigate the medium-term impact of these shifts on the quality of SOM and its role as an important C sink, the A horizon from soils of the fire-prone Sierra de Aznalcóllar (Southern Spain) were sampled 4 weeks and 7 years after a severe fire. The solid-state 13C and 15N nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of the samples obtained 4 weeks after the fire indicated quick incorporation of PyOM into SOM. Correspondingly, pyrrole-type N dominated the organic N fraction. Seven years after the fire, the aryl C contribution decreased from 46% to 23% of organic C, although it was still higher at the burnt sites than in the unburnt reference soil (16%). This fast loss of PyOM may be due to erosion, transport into deeper soils or microbial decomposition. The contribution of the latter is in line with former incubation experiments with burnt soils from the same area. Comparably, in the recovered soil, BN was almost completely substituted by amide N. Studying the partitioning of PyOM among the density and particle size fractions of the soils, indicated that after medium-term recuperation, most PyOM occurred in the free and occluded particulate OM fractions (fPOM and oPOM). The low protection against microbial degradation and the low density of these fractions may explain the high PyOM losses from the studied soils either by decomposition or by transport. We suggested that formation of PyOM-soil mineral associates represents an important step for reducing losses of fire-derived charcoal due to biochemical mineralization and thus to its sequestration in soils.

Multiple simultaneous exposures to electromagnetic signals induced adjustments in mammal nervous systems. In this study, we investigated the non-thermal SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) in the cerebral or cerebellar hemispheres of rats exposed in vivo to combined electromagnetic field (EMF) signals at 900 and 2450 MHz.Forty rats divided into four groups of 10 were individually exposed or not exposed to radiation in a GTEM chamber for one or two hours. After radiation, we used the Chemiluminescent Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ChELISA) technique to measure cellular stress levels, indicated by the presence of heat shock proteins (HSP) 90 and 70, as well as caspase-3-dependent pre-apoptotic activity in left and right cerebral and cerebellar hemispheres of Sprague Dawley rats.Twenty-four hours after exposure to combined or single radiation, significant differences were evident in HSP 90 and 70 but not in caspase 3 levels between the hemispheres of the cerebral cortex at high SAR levels. In the cerebellar hemispheres, groups exposed to a single radiofrequency (RF) and high SAR showed significant differences in HSP 90, 70 and caspase-3 levels compared to control animals. The absorbed energy and/or biological effects of combined signals were not additive, suggesting that multiple signals act on nervous tissue by a different mechanism.
